Description
Introducing the RME ADI-2FS
The RME ADI-2 FS is a high-end, compact, and extremely flexible 2-channel AD/DA converter. This small 9.5-inch unit offers first-class AD/DA conversion to/from SPDIF, AES, and ADAT, up to 192 kHz. Its ability to use SPDIF, AES, and ADAT formats ensures exceptional compatibility. Just plug it in!
Strengths
Balanced analog inputs and outputs, headphone monitoring, SteadyClock FS for optimal conversion quality, 3-stage hardware input and output level control, and additional DD and AA modes make the ADI-2 FS a versatile tool and a flexible solution to many problems. Its professional-grade sound also makes it a suitable complement to other high-end converters.
The ADI-2 FS features two servo-balanced analog line inputs via XLR/phone combo jacks, balanced XLR and unbalanced telephone jacks that can be used simultaneously, a front-panel adjustable high-power headphone output, an ADAT-compatible optical SPDIF input/output, and a coaxial SPDIF input/output (RCA, AES/EBU compatible). These extensive connectivity options allow for highly flexible and uncompromising signal transmission.
Reference digital clock
The analog inputs utilize the highly regarded, advanced circuit design of the ADI-2 Pro, delivering exceptionally low noise and distortion, as well as an extended frequency response. Three different input and output level settings ensure seamless compatibility in the analog domain. Another highlight is SteadyClock FS, RME’s latest clocking technology for maximum jitter suppression and minimal self-jitter. This guarantees outstanding sound quality, completely independent of the quality of the current reference clock. The ADI-2 FS also employs the ADI-2 Pro’s conversion technology: the AK557x family and the AK4490 not only provide a 192 kHz sampling rate and minimal distortion, but also a dynamic range of 120 dBA.
But the ADI-2 has more to offer than just exceptional sound. It also boasts impressive digital connectivity. Its coaxial RCA SPDIF input/output features switchable channel status, making it fully AES/EBU compatible (cable adapter required). The TOSLINK optical inputs/outputs can handle up to 192 kHz and also function as ADAT inputs/outputs, even at 192 kHz. Operation with SPDIF input and ADAT output, or vice versa, is supported in both AD/DA and DD modes.
The clear layout and distinct labeling of the front panel with its function buttons, informative status display, 6-LED level indicator and tidy rear panel make it easy to use the device right out of the box.
Unexpected versatility in format conversion
When the input selection is set to DIG, the unit functions as a digital format converter with simultaneous control. The AD converter is disabled, while the DA converter is always used for controlling the digital input signal to the rear outputs and headphone output. Format conversion is possible between all optionscoaxial SPDIF (or AES) with professional or consumer status, as well as ADAT.
The ANA output selection connects the analog output circuit directly to the analog input circuit. The DA converter is no longer active. The AD converter continues to convert the analog input signal to SPDIF (AES) or ADAT, with coaxial SPDIF and optical ADAT outputs available simultaneously. This « analog bypass » allows the ADI-2 FS to be used as an analog preamplifier (line level only). Gain and attenuation can be adjusted by setting the input and output levels, or even made fully variable when the VOL potentiometer is inserted. In this mode, the ADI-2 FS supports analog levels up to +22 dBu. Furthermore, it can operate as a balanced-to-unbalanced converter and vice versa.
The front panel knob adjusts the headphone output volume. It can also be routed through the rear signal path via a simple key combination, allowing for stepless level adjustment of the rear line outputs, just like the headphone output. Three hardware levels remain available, enabling precise matching of the desired levels on the front and rear outputs.
High Power headphone output
The ADI-2 FS uses a scaled-down version of the ADI-2 Pro’s Extreme Power output stage. With up to 0.7 watts per channel, an output impedance of 0.1 ohm, a maximum output level of +19 dBu, and very low THD (-110 dB), the High Power² circuit is universally applicable. A relay ensures clickless power-on and power-off.
Power supply
Power is supplied by an external switching power supply with a locking connector. Thanks to its wide operating voltage range of 9 to 15 volts, the ADI-2 FS can be easily used with a battery or rechargeable cell, making it suitable for mobile applications. It is also ideal for galvanic isolation in laboratory settings or for measurement applications.
